Voice over IP (VoIP)
Voice over IP (VoIP) is a technology that allows the Internet to be used for transmitting voice conversations. This technology has several advantages over standard telephone systems. Firstly VoIP can be much cheaper as there is no need to pay the line rental on numerous phone lines. Call charges are typically cheaper too, especially those overseas. Flexibility is also much greater as the phone number is not tied to a physical line and can move with a user or even allow remote users to participate in a company phone system with minimal cost.
VoIP is not without its disadvantages. Firstly compared with traditional phone systems it is relatively new and with a wide range of hardware and service providers there can be some compatibility issues. The most likely problem areas have always been voice quality and reliability. If a company had one Internet connection with several voice connections as well as email and general Internet traffic sharing, voice quality would probably vary. Also if the Internet connection dropped the calls would be cut off.
To get the best out of VoIP it is important to design the system correctly. This design will include the following. Fault tolerance, a minimum of two Internet connections will maintain both VoIP and other Internet services if a line fails. Quality of Service will prioritise VoIP traffic so that voice will not become broken or jittery if a line becomes busy. The correct amount of bandwidth must be planned carefully to give acceptable service. Last but not least is porting of numbers. It is possible to keep your terrestrial numbers and port them over to your VoIP system. This is not an instant process and needs to be planned with the phone company to minimise down time. Testing is very important with VoIP to ensure the system performs according to the design.

VoIP Private Branch Exchange
The Vigor IPPBX 2820 which is a good quality router which supports all the facilities of the class leading Vigor 2820 router. It also has a built in private branch exchange (PBX) using VoIP technology. This can also be connected to existing ISDN lines which allows fault tolerance and cost effective migration from a traditional phone system. This phone system then becomes the heart of an integrated phone system and works with any combination of VoIP phone, analogue phone connected with ATA's or soft phones running on computers. Draytek will soon be launching the Vigor IPPBX 3510. This has the same functionality as the IPPBX 2820 but has greater capacity and more connectivity options.
The VigorPhone 350 is a good quality VoIP handset which will work well as either a standalone VoIP phone or with a Vigor IPPBX. It benefits from being able to take power from its network connection (POE) when used with a suitable network switch or from a plug in power block.
The VigorSwitch P2260 is a 24 port rack mountable managed Power Over Ethernet (POE) network switch. This is ideal for networks with large numbers of POE devices like the VigorPhone 350 or the Vigor AP800 wireless access point.
The ATA-24SH VoIP Analogue Adaptor is a 24 port Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA) which allows 24 low cost analogue phones to work with an IPPBX. A typical application for this would be a hotel with existing analogue phones.
